* * *

After our late lunch, I itched to text Sun about lighting the candle. I wanted to tell them so badly. I wanted to thank them. I wanted to tell them how it felt and that I’d been thinking of them when I did it. I wanted to kiss them. Okay, maybe I wouldn’t tell them those last two things. I wasn’t sure how they’d be received, since we’d only just left the enemy part of our frenemy relationship behind.

But I wasn’t sure I should do any of that in Antonia’s presence.

She cleared her throat. “Not going to text Sun?”

Ugh. “What? I’m not in the mood for the ‘we can’t trust Sun lecture.’ ”

“Yeah, I know.”

“We can be friends. You and Fable are friends.”

Antonia pulled a face. “We’re not.”

“You are.”

“We’re colleagues. We tolerate each other. I don’t text Fable when I figure out a new spell or break a curse.”

“You literally call Fable to gloat when you do something spectacular. I’ve heard you. And Fable calls you for advice and help and also to gloat when they do something awesome. So, yes, you’re friends.”

Antonia made a rude noise with her lips. “Whatever. But no, you can’t trust Sun. Rule followers, the both of them.”

“Sun literally came over to teach me how to light the candle.” I cleared my throat, fiddled with a loose thread on my jeans. Antonia already knew that Sun and I were friends and that Sun knew I was learning magic. Might as well lay all of my cards out on the table. “Sun knows about the Spell Binder.”

Antonia slammed on the brake, throwing me against the seat belt. Luckily, we were by the curb in front of my apartment block.

“What?” she yelled. “Since when?”

“Since the curtains. They found it when they were trying to find my phone to call you.”

“Fuck!” Antonia slammed her open palm on the steering wheel so hard the horn bleated. “Rook! If Sun knows, Fable knows.”

I shook my head. “No. No. Sun says they haven’t said anything. And they came over to teach me magic. Sun is my friend. I know you don’t trust anyone, especially anyone on good terms with the Consortium, but Sun isn’t going to say anything.”

“They ratted us out to the Consortium!”

“They didn’t! It was the singing mice guy. Sun swears they didn’t.”

“Ugh. You like them. That’s what this is. A love story happening in my office. Gross.”

I flinched. “No,” I said, too loudly for the small space. “No! No! That’s not—no!”

Antonia raised an eyebrow. “Me thinks the teenager doth protest too much.”

I covered my face with my hands. “Oh my god.”

“Don’t be so dramatic. Just…” She sighed. “Don’t talk to them tonight. Take a break. I need a minute to think. Can you do that?”

“Yes,” I said, not at all like a sulky teenager.

“Great.” She threw the car into park. “I’ll see you in the morning. And no trying magic without me,” she said, face stern, wagging a finger in my direction. Then she peered around, lip curled.
